Remove Poison Ivy Effectively

How to Identify Poison Ivy

Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) is an invasive plant that rapidly spreads through woodlands and wildland, under hedges and along properties.

You can easily recognize it by its three-leaflet clusters. Poison ivy varies from green to reddish depending on the season, making it harder to identify for non-specialists. It can carpet the ground, grow like a shrub or wind around trees like a vine.

What is the difference between ragweed, poison ivy and poison oak?

Poison ivy, poison oak and ragweed are often confused, but these plants have quite a different impact. Ragweed is a main cause of seasonal allergies, and many tear it from the ground without a second thought.

On the flip side, poison ivy triggers a painful poison ivy rash, which is why people tread around it with caution. Poison oak is also known to cause contact dermatitis. These plants are harder to remove than ragweed, as they regrow from the roots.

How Do We Get Rid of Poison Ivy?

We use a low-impact spot treatment to remove poison ivy. It meets applicable standards in Quebec municipalities, including for sensitive environments.

A series of three applications are done about a month apart, ideally from mid-May. This approach gradually weakens the poison ivy plant, causing a significant reduction after one season.

Two seasons of treatment are enough to virtually eradicate its aerial parts. If shoots appear afterwards, we can quickly get them under control with a one-time treatment.

Why Should I Remove Poison Ivy?

Removing poison ivy helps minimize contact risks and prevent adverse skin reactions. You can pick up poison ivy rash from direct or indirect contact, for example when the plant oil lingers on pet fur, clothing or tools.

Removing the plant also prevents its spread in outdoor spaces, keeping both adults and children safe.
